Boston Legal: No Brains Left Behind

 <modified>2008-10-12T22:44+00:00

I guess I'm just naive. When I first saw the gleam in Alan's eye I knew he was going to try and sue the National Guard. "Ah yes. " I thought. "Alan loves to take on the government." I was happy. I like it when people question the government. It keeps them on their toes. Unfortunately what I didn't see coming was another comment against the war in Iraq. For the record. I think every soldier should be pulled out of Iraq and brought home. The entire thing is a ridiculous quagmire and I am embarrassed that my government is responsible for making it happen. That being said. I am really sick of hearing those same sentiments from Alan Shore!
Moving on to other annoying plotlines. I was incensed by Shirley's granddaughter. As before. I am a huge fan of civil disobedience. There were many times in high school when I felt like acting out against injustice the same way Marlena did. What stopped me was a fear of the consequences. Marlena knew there would be consequences to her actions and she had to know that those consequences would be expulsion. Someone please explain to me how the girl expects to stay in school when she can't even apologize for what she did or more importantly why she would even want to.
I know that the American education system is broken and has been for some time now but for me and many parents like me there is no alternative. We're not fortunate enough to afford private school or home schooling so we send our kids off to the next best thing. However if you want your kids to get a decent education it can't stop there. If Marlena and her parents aren't happy with the education she's receiving then it's their responsibility to do something about it something more effective and a little less selfish than suing the school to let her back in.
One last thing about Marlena. If she gets a job at Crane. Poole & Schmidt and I have to listen to a slew of dirty old man comments from Denny. I'll issue my own fatwa.
actually trying to get me to stop watching? Because writing off John Larroquette is a good way to succeed.
So. Lorraine was a madam. Whew what a relief. I thought maybe she was going to say she had actually done something illegal that could put the firm at risk for malpractice... Wait a minute!
I hate to say it but overall this was a terrible episode. There were a few things I liked... Henry Gibson was hilarious as always. Steve Hytner was great as the impassioned principal and Denny and Alan trying to enlist was pretty funny. At least Carl decided to stay.
I usually enjoy Alan's (DEK's) questionning of current situations. However this week was very heavy handed with both Alan and Shirley preaching about the state of almost everything. With that said. I did find Alan's trial and enlistment scenes amusing. I almost spit out my milk thru my nose when Denny and Alan were in the dress whites.
Wow. Talk about left-wing red meat! Even I was surprised how much was thrown out this week. Of course. I love it but it made me wonder if ABC executives were on vacation when this episode was written because of all the liberal comments made. I'm sure that the media watch groups will issue their own fatwa on this.
I love this show but I found last nights episode to be so heavy handed as to be annoying. I felt like I was being bludgend by their view. Now. I share most of them but I did not need to be hit over the head continually from all. Alan and Denny trying to join the national guard was priceless. They are the best couple in a relationship on the air.
i disagree with most of you these topics need to be brought up and discussed and even if you don't agree with the point of view expressed in the show it doesn't matter it makes you think about it why would you complain about that? sounds like you bitch too much paul?you are looking for something to dislike.
*sigh* Quagmire. Always the indicator that someone gets their news primarily from left-wing blogs. We're actually *succeeding* in Iraq right now thanks to Petraeus so.. whatever. I stopped watching BL this week. I've had enough of DLK's bullshit. We all know he hates 50% of this country. We frigging GET IT. All Republicans are stupid and evil the government is corrupt and wants to kill all minorities. WE GET IT. We know where you stand. David. You can't stand anyone who isn't a far left Hollywood Democrat. WE. GET. IT. You've ruined watching Shats and Spader for me and now I will *never again* hear your "message" because you chose to convey it like a three year old with a bullhorn.
I have to agree with most of the posters here - last night crossed a line. Although I don't typically agree with most of the positions that are put forth on BL. I do enjoy the way they take their shots at the White House and poke fun at long standing policies. But last night the quick jabs became a full force bludgeoning! I've watched a lot of David E. Kelley's shows but I'm about ready to stop. Lately Kelley seems to be morphing into Michael Moore and trust me when I say we don't need TWO of him!!! We don't even need one of him but we're stuck with him! If David E. Kelley continues to shove his political agenda down our throats I'll be watching something else on Tuesday nights. I want to be entertained and informed not subjected to a weekly tirade of ranting and bitching by the "morally superior" David E. Kelley.
So you saw immediately that he was going to sue the National Guard but you didn't see a comment on the Iraq War coming? Are you a little slow? And I'm with Shawn these things do need to be discussed. Keeping these issues confined to news programs (what little actual news there still is) obviously isn't working. If we could get similar social commentary into an American Idol episode somehow maybe we wouldn't be stuck in the mess we're in.
Thank you for responding to BL's message. I have been searching for over 30 min for some response to last night's synopsis of USA. 2007. So what the plot was not well developed: the messages needed to be verbalized. It is doubly sad and one more symptom of this disaster called Bush's America that the only venue presenting these messages is a soapy drama. What else did we throw out w/habius corpus?
I thought this episode was a little preachy too. And as for Iraq... I get it. It doesn't matter how we got there we are there and we need to deal with it. We need to finish what was started and stop complaining about it. Anyway.. back to the episode for as much as the Nat'l Guard thing got on my nerve (It just wasn't funny. It just wan't good as it has been in previous episodes. IT. WASN'T. FUNNY.) I thought the No Child Left Behind was NICE.. it is about time someone.. anyone publicly said that NCLB is the WORST education bill to be passed in this country. Teachers teach tests.. period. There really isn't time for the kids to unwind.. my son in the first grade has 1 hour of homework a night on average. He is 7!So um.. that part was good.
Thanks for giving me false hope that that HORRIBLE Carl Sack was going to leave. I've been supporting John Larroquette to get the boot since he came on. It looks like it's going to be a long long time before I like his ass again. COME ON. JOHN. GET OFF THIS SHOW! IT'S CRAP AND YOU ARE PLAYING A CRAP CHARACTER!
I have a small concern with a comment made by Alan Shore (James Spader) at the conclusion balcony scene of this episode. Mr. Shore commented that volunteerism in the United States is on the rise. While statistically this may be true in actuality while more individuals are volunteering (especially for one-time "save the world on a Saturday morning" projects) than ever before they are actually volunteering less hours. Two items fuel non-profits donations and volunteers and since 80% of the people that volunteer for an organization donate to that organization it stands to reason that nonprofits desperately need a continual army of volunteers. I know the writers were attempting to make a point however comments like that can often backfire and make potential volunteers assume they are not needed. Thanks for the chance to vent a bit.
I was listening to Rachel Maddow’s show last night and I think she made a very salient inform; while Mike Huckabee excelled at being the media darling candidate that never had a chance now that he does have a chance and has the real spotlight on him he’s a wee bit of a joke.
For instance as an apparent jab at Mitt Romney through his religion. ? My thought being but aren’t they?
authorise as long time readers ordain know,. Still technically shouldn’t anyone who buys into the whole Christian mythos kinda undergo to adjudge that Jesus and Satan are brothers? Half-brothers at least. I mean. Satan was an Angel after all and apparently one of God’s favorites. advance. God did make Satan but then cast him out of heaven.
It’s desire you undergo two sons one who turns out to be the male version of care Teresa while the other becomes a crack dealer. The change dealer’s still your son at least biologically. I guess you could disown him or something but still.
But I also have this question here: What the hell does this undergo to do with running a country? Really! Believing Jesus and Satan are brothers has absolutely no bearing on the deficit the looming recession the problems in Iraq nor National Defence.
And people doubt me when I say religion and politics don’t mix.

It must be the end of the year if party leaders are trading barbs like these. Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel of Illinois accused Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of favoring earmarks over cancer cures veterans' health compassionate and 50,000 new American teachers Tuesday after the Kentucky Republican suggested a one percent across-the-board cut on all domestic discretionary spending to wrap-up a year-end spending contend.
Under McConnell's plan the bill should also include an unfettered $70 billion for the war in Iraq and each of the more than $9 billion worth of earmarks that House Appropriations Chairman David Obey (D-Wis.) has threatened to cut.“First Mitch McConnell sides with the White House and insists on a blank check for Iraq," Emanuel said in a statement. "Now he's fighting for earmarks over funding for cancer cures the veterans' health compassionate crisis and 50,000 new American teachers. "Under Senator McConnell's budget proposal," the outspoken Democratic leader continued. "Iraq and his own re-election campaign would come first while America's health care and education needs would come last.
One wonders which Alan Greenspan bombshell will provide more ammunition for right wing engrave assassins - claiming Iraq really ; or “ George W furnish for ‘abandoning fiscal constraint’ and praising account Clinton’s anti-deficit policies during the Nineties as ‘an act of political courage.’” Oh and don’t drop the Big Dog’s “sharp and ‘curious’ object and ‘old-fashioned’ caution about the dangers of debt.”
Speaking of Iraq (and ) the same Observer bind quoting Greenspan’s treasonous observations of President Clinton’s superior financial acumen
reports that a recent poll indicates more than 1.2 million Iraqis “may have died” as a prove of the US-led invasion and subsequent occupation. modify: More on Greenspan’s upcoming memoirs (including more appraise for President Clinton) from (h/t ).
On the protracted presence…I just watched John Kerry say emphatically that we need to undergo an “enduring relationship” with Iraq. You won’t find much agitate room on this idea sadly.
Well a long-term occupation (to quote Bob Kagan. ““) should go as no surprise. You don’t build the largest and most expensive US embassy ever–$600 mil and “roughly the size of Vatican City” as per –if one is planning on minimizing the US’ role in Iraqi affairs any time soon.
The fact that John Kerry apparently accepts the Korea copy as conventional wisdom only serves to reinforce what Mick was getting at yesterday (ducks!)

The "Cult" of Republicanism: Simplicity as Idol

 <modified>2007-10-30T12:28+00:00

OK. Barry. I'll take your advice and blame it all on you. For as you. Mr. Goldwater advised during your ill-fated 1964 presidential campaign: "The big affect with the so-called liberal today is that he doesn't understand simplicity."
Problems? No problems you said as desire as "we have the courage to face them.... Those who don't undergo that courage want complicated answers" -- a animate of wholesale anti-intellectualism that prompted NYT columnist Tom Wicker to note that you're like a "child... with a child's directness and lack of complexity."
From that '64 campaign you. Barry inadvertently created the New Republican Guard -- the New Right -- which morphed over the years into the blind anti-intellectual monsters in hold back today; those who in their pursuit of electoral dominance trashed the electorally inept Old Guard's cherished principles of small government balanced budgets and fiscal sanity.
And trash them they did -- soundly solidly completely -- endowing us with a bloated supply-sided debt-ridden ineffective government; ineffective that is except for those who don't need it. The anti-intellectuals would merrily displace in the plutocratic cash to cover their political forge and further indulge the plutocracy leaving the lay class and poor to fend for themselves. Socialism as they say for the rich; capitalism for the rest of us.
As columnist Jonathan Chait observes in a recent New Republic article. "": "American politics has been hijacked by a tiny coterie of right-wing economic extremists some of them ideological zealots others merely greedy a few of them possibly insane. The scope of their triumph is breathtaking. Over the course of the measure three decades they undergo moved from the right-wing fringe to the commanding heights of the national agenda. Notions that would undergo been laughed at a generation ago.. are now so pervasive they barely attract any notice.
"The result has been a slow- communicate disaster," writes Chait availing massive deficits unsustainable income inequality and big government by business lobbyists.
Meanwhile the anti-intellectual politicos on the alter hysterically rush that for instance rising income inequality -- buttressed by slashes in marginal tax rates and resulting in jumbo deficits which the lay class and poor will acquire -- is merely a demagogic fright-mantra of liberalism in its habitual campaigns of class warfare.
But the demagoguery was and is all theirs of course. And now as the economic chickens go home to roost some of their then-gleeful co-conspirators are bellowing accuse and fingering the real culprits. But only from a safe and sagacious hold.
The latest self-sparing safety-first co-conspirer to rat out his pals is Alan Greenspan. Monday is the official launch of his delicious memoirs. "The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World," in which -- from that familiar distance -- he not only fingers the culprits he screws them but good.
"Greenspan paints a picture of Mr. Bush as a man driven more by ideology" -- that would be the ideology of simplicity advanced by Barry Goldwater -- "and the desire to fulfill campaign promises made in 2000 incurious about the effects of his economic policy...."
Incurious. The perfect evince. For when one possesses an all-encompassing roundly simplistic ideology that makes intellectual strain a needless exercise curiosity becomes merely a time-consuming interference with presidential ride rides.
Jonathan Chait's bind delves deeply and insightfully into the origins of what he calls today's Republican "cult" of ideological economic madness. Some may care to read it. But me? I'll just act Goldwater's anti-intellectual advice and simplistically accuse it all on him -- much as he did himself after it was too late and he saw what madness he had wrought._______
Greenspan is only trying to get out in front of being blamed for the current liquidity crisis. As I recall. Greenspan had something to do with the ridiculously low interest rates which fueled the chimp's "economic miracle."
Let's approach it. Bush's tax cuts weren't enacted to affect the economy. They were enacted to make rich people richer. And they worked desire a appeal. But they didn't "course down" too much and the moron-Amercians would eventually smell a rat. So. Greenspan made getting ridiculous sums of money easy and Congress simultaneously passed laws to make it considerably more difficult to say bankruptcy.
Greenspan's low low interest rates gave us the illusion that not-so-curious George's economic policies were really really working and that the "new" economy based largely on the housing industry and real estate speculation was booming. Until reality stepped in interest rates went back up and the economy stalled.
Now all those populate who undergo below prime ARMs are defaulting on their loans and oops we've got big problems. It's only a be of measure before the SCLM connects the dots and blames the mess on Greenspan who was only doing his move to hold.
